It’s always a pleasure to see our researchers spreading the word about group minds and sharing insights with the wider academic world. We’re delighted to announce the successful presentation of the paper “Military Group Minds in the Narration of Late Roman Succession Events” at the War in the Ancient World International Conference 2025, held in Münster from 29–31 May.

Byron Waldron, Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Cyprus and member of the ‘Group Minds in Ancient Narrative’ project, presented this innovative study which explored how the concept of group minds can help us better understand Roman representations of the Tetrarchic imperial college. Focusing on Latin historiography — including the Historia Augusta, Lactantius’ De Mortibus Persecutorum, and the Historiae Abbreuiatae — the paper examined how military group cognition was used to narrate political change, explain usurpations, and construct imperial legitimacy through patterns of collective agency.

A productive discussion followed the presentation, and the topic sparked further engagement during networking sessions throughout the conference. Such initiatives build meaningful bridges with the academic community and affirm that we no longer discuss group minds in siloes. Instead, we are actively inviting scholars from across disciplines to explore this concept with us — and we are captivating their interest.
