Professor Despo Fatta-Kassinos, from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of Cyprus, has been appointed as one of the seven members of the newly established Engineering Section Committee of Academia Europaea. This Committee was established following the decision to divide the former Physics and Engineering Section into two independent sections. The Engineering Section will begin full operation in time for the 2025/2026 activities cycle, and the committee will play a central role in steering its activities.

Academia Europaea (Academy of Europe) is a pan-European network of distinguished scholars, dedicated to the advancement and propagation of excellence in scholarship across the humanities, law, the economic, social, and political sciences, mathematics, medicine, and all branches of natural and technological sciences anywhere in the world for the public benefit and for the advancement of the education of the public of all ages. The Academy promotes European research, advises governments and international organisations on scientific matters, and fosters interdisciplinary and international research collaboration.

An internationally recognized expert in wastewater engineering, Professor Fatta-Kassinos brings a wealth of scientific expertise to this interdisciplinary committee. Her appointment is a clear recognition of her academic leadership, sustained research excellence, and contributions to environmental engineering.  Through her extensive involvement in high-impact research and strategic academic collaborations at both national and international levels, she has played a pivotal role in advancing the development and application of innovative environmental technologies. Her selection also reflects Academia Europaea’s commitment to diversity and inclusive representation in its leadership bodies.
