The University of Cyprus (UCY) proudly hosted the General Assembly of the Young European Research Universities Network (YERUN) from 7th to 9th October 2025, bringing together leaders and representatives from Europe’s most dynamic young research universities in Nicosia.

The three-day event opened with a brief presentation of UCY by its Rector, Professor Tasos Christofides. A presentation by the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Professor Tatiana Eleni Synodinou followed, highlighting UCY’s research excellence and policies fostering innovation and collaboration.

Delegates enjoyed a tour of the campus and the KIOS Research Centre, followed by cultural guided visits to Old Nicosia and the CYENS Research Centre.

The Leaders Workshop on 8 October featured policy discussions on the European Research Area (ERA) Act, with contributions from Ms Magda De Carli, Head of the Unit for ERA at the European Commission, Mr Slaven Misljencevic, Policy Officer at the Directorate General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, and Ms Lina Tsoumpanou, Coordinator of EU and International Files of the Cyprus Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy.  Conversations focused on institutional autonomy, academic freedom, and the priorities of the forthcoming Cyprus EU Presidency.  Parallel to the Leaders Workshop, the YERUN Coordinators Workshop focused on discussions about the YERUN Working Methods, moderated by the YERUN Brussels Office.

The Assembly concluded on 9 October with the official YERUN General Assembly Meeting, where members discussed YERUN’s Strategy for the period 2026–2030, financial updates, and elected the new YERUN President.

UCY, which is a member of YERUN since 2021, is honoured to have served as host, reinforcing its commitment to advancing European cooperation in research, education, and innovation.
