Welcome to the TWIN2SUSTAIN project website. TWIN2SUSTAIN is a vital initiative addressing the significant challenges posed by climate change and Sustainable Development (SD) in the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East, and North Africa (EMMENA) region. While the University of Cyprus (UCY) has been actively involved in relevant areas such as water, renewable energy, and oceanography, there remains a need for a more coordinated approach, particularly concerning the socioeconomic aspects of SD. This exciting undertaking will last for the next 3 years and we are thrilled that we will have an opportunity to improve the research landscape of Cyprus.
By forming a strategic partnership with renowned institutions UNU-MERIT and UANTWERP, TWIN2SUSTAIN aims to consolidate UCY’s research efforts, bringing together expertise from multiple disciplines. This collaboration will enhance UCY’s research excellence, fostering international visibility and advancing innovation in critical areas such as gender equality, science diplomacy, and economic development. Through this project, we aspire to contribute meaningfully to addressing the pressing challenges of the climate crisis and Sustainable Development in the EMMENA region and beyond.
October 7, 2025Webinar: Introduction to inter-and transdisciplinary research 7 October 2025
This webinar session introduces the main principles of IDR and TDR and why it should or should not (?) be considered an option for researchers to engage in. It gives a concise yet comprehensive overview of what inter- and transdisciplinary research entails and identifies opportunities and challenges that come with crossing disciplinary boundaries. It opens up discussion on how to navigate and leverage these complexities and what roles PhD or Postdoctoral researchers could play. It questions in which ways they can (or should) be further supported and reflects on potential incentives that could be provided by their research institutions. This webinar is organised by RIVA, the UAntwerp research department and IMDO, the Institute for Environment and Sustainable Development of the University of Antwerp with the support of the EU-funded Twin2Sustain research project.
September 29, 2025TWIN2SUSTAIN Stakeholder Meeting on Sustainable Development to be held in Nicosia, 15–17 October 2025
The TWIN2SUSTAIN consortium will host a three-day Stakeholder Meeting in Nicosia bringing together academics, policymakers, municipalities, and civil society to shape the foundations of the Sustainable Development Hub in Cyprus. The programme includes an international conference on citizen engagement and local hubs (15 Oct), a working meeting with Strovolos Municipality (16 Oct), and scientific team sessions at UCY (17 Oct). This milestone event strengthens European cooperation and reinforces TWIN2SUSTAIN’s commitment to sustainable urban futures and research excellence.
