The UNESCO Chair on Gender Equality at UCY

The UNESCO Chair on Gender Equality at UCY is one of the seven UNESCO Chairs in total currently operating at various HEIs in Cyprus, and was the second one founded on the island.

Watch the following short film (in Greek), produced by the Cyprus National UNESCO Commission to discover the rich body of work and socially significant interventions made by Cyprus' UNESCO Chairs. Created to mark the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO Chairs program in Cyprus, the film highlights the mission, achievements, and future prospects of each of the seven UNESCO Chairs based at Cypriot universities.

Scope and Objectives

The UNESCO Chair on Gender Equality was established aiming to provide a new paradigm on how common problems faced by the populations of the region can be addressed through the gender perspective. To achieve its objectives, the Chair undertakes an integrated system of research, training, information and documentation activities in the fields of women's issues and gender studies. In this context, institutions, academics, GOs and NGOs in Europe, the Balkans and Middle East, with respect to cultural diversity, combine their efforts through the UNESCO Chair for the promotion of gender equality.

The University of Cyprus and its various regional and international partners on Gender Equality and Empowerment aim at functioning not only as a centre of excellence for local development on gender empowerment and collaboration, but also as a dynamic pole of synergy among the various relevant chairs, networks, and working groups for the achievement of UNESCO's objectives regarding the overarching global priority of gender equality. The Chair's partnership and collaborators have been carefully designed to contribute to North-South and South-South collaboration, for the promotion of a creative dialogue and mainstream anticipation of problems and negative attitudes that are presented in the socio-economic, educational, and political sphere. From this point of view, the Chair's partnership seeks to diagnose the real needs of each region involved and to act as a creative think tank that supports the development of local poles for the elimination of the theory vs praxis divide in gender equality and empowerment.

The Chair's objective over the next five years is to promote cooperation between all relevant actors in Cypriot society - from the public, academic, private sector, Civil Society and Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) - with the aim of promoting gender equality.

I actually have an odd wish: that this Chair should not exist in the future, that it should not be needed - that we will have reached gender equality, so we don't need a Chair specifically dedicated to these issues.
