Marina Neophytou, Dean of UCY’s Faculty of Engineering and Head of the Environmental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory – Isle of Excellence, on Astra 92.8’s ‘Broadcasting for the Planet’

On Thursday, February 6, 2025, Marina Neophytou, Head of the Environmental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory – Isle of Excellence – UCY and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Cyprus, participated in the radio program “Broadcasting for the Planet” on Astra 92.8. The discussion focused on the operation of asphalt plants, a topic of critical importance for the environmental and social well-being of the surrounding area.

It is noted that, following pressure from residents of the wider South Nicosia–Idalion Municipality area and intervention by the state, the asphalt plants suspended their operations. The decision to locate these plants in the Mitsero area was a political one, which, according to the final Evaluation Report by the Advisory Group of the University of Cyprus, does not allow for definitive or safe conclusions. Dr. Neophytou also served as coordinator of that committee.
