March 23, 2026Professor Marios Polycarpou, of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering, and Chair of the Council of the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus, has been elected a member of the European Academy of Sciences in the field of Engineering.
This international distinction is awarded to scientists in recognition of their contributions to the advancement of research, innovation, and technology, as well as to the promotion of interdisciplinary collaboration. It also constitutes recognition of Professor Polycarpou’s significant work in the areas of intelligent systems and networks, neural networks and computational intelligence, automated fault diagnosis, and control systems.
European Academy of Sciences
The European Academy of Sciences (EURASC) (https://www.eurasc.eu/), based in Belgium, is a non-profit, non-governmental, and independent organization that brings together Europe’s most distinguished scientists and engineers, who conduct pioneering research and develop advanced technologies, with the aim of promoting science and technology to enhance social and economic development. It is organized into nine fields, ranging from the natural and applied sciences to the social sciences and the humanities.
The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Cyprus extends its warm congratulations to Professor Marios Polycarpou for this outstanding distinction, which recognizes his scientific excellence and many years of contribution to international research, while at the same time strengthening the position and prestige of the University of Cyprus in the European and international academic community.
Short Biography – Prof. Polycarpou
Marios Polycarpou is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Cyprus, Chairman of the Council of the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence, Visiting Professor at Imperial College London, member of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts, and member of the European Academy of Sciences (Academia Europaea). In 2023, he was awarded the prestigious IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Technical Field Award for his pioneering research in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
He completed his undergraduate studies on scholarship at Rice University, USA (B.A. in Computer Science, 1987; B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, 1987), and his graduate studies at the University of Southern California, USA (M.Sc., 1989; Ph.D., 1992, Electrical Engineering). In 1992, he joined the University of Cincinnati, USA, where he became Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computing Systems. In 2001, he was the first academic member to join the newly established Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Cyprus, serving as Department Chair from 2001 to 2008.
In 2006, he was elected IEEE Fellow, and during 2012–2013 he served as President of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. In 2016, Professor Polycarpou received the IEEE Neural Networks Pioneer Award for his groundbreaking research in neural networks.
Over a thirty-year academic career, Professor Polycarpou has secured competitive funding for more than 80 research projects in the USA, Europe, and Cyprus. The pinnacle of his research excellence is reflected in major grants from the European Research Council, including an ERC Synergy Grant (2020), an ERC Advanced Grant (2012), three ERC Proof of Concept Grants, as well as the Teaming programme that led to the upgrade of KIOS into a European Research and Innovation Center of Excellence (KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence).
