
“Engineering at the Crossroads: Challenges and Opportunities in a Changing Landscape” – Online Presentation of the School of Engineering at the Joint Research Centre

March 23, 2026The meeting between the Faculty of Engineering, University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Institute (CyI), led by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Marina Neophytou and the President of the Cyprus Institute, Professor Stavros Malas, brought together representatives from both institutions to discuss areas of common strategic interest.
The meeting provided a platform for presenting research activities, exchanging perspectives, and exploring opportunities for future collaboration. Discussions were structured around five (5) key thematic pillars, with participants outlining their current research priorities and engaging in a constructive dialogue on potential joint initiatives. The exchange proved particularly valuable in clarifying the existing collaborative landscape and identifying opportunities to further strengthen, deepen, and expand cooperation in the following areas:
- Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning & Applications in Drone Technology
- Climate Change
- Energy
- Materials Science, with emphasis on Nanotechnology
- Cultural Heritage
The discussion highlighted the strong complementarities and significant potential for synergies between the two institutions, concluding that both organizations acknowledge the importance of fostering collaboration rather than competition. This shared understanding provides a foundation for leveraging these complementarities to develop concrete, sustainable, and mutually beneficial opportunities for cooperation in the period ahead.
