Our ERC project GROUP MINDS IN ANCIENT NARRATIVE is pleased to welcome Professor Douglas Cairns from the University of Edinburgh, who will be delivering a talk on:

“Emotional Contagion, Empathy, and Sympathy as Responses to Verbal and Visual Narratives: Some Conceptual and Methodological Issues”

Talk Summary

Professor Cairns will explore the emotional connection between audiences and characters in epic and tragedy, with a focus on the role of vision, visualization, and imagination. He will discuss whether audience emotions arise through mimicry, mirroring, or imaginative engagement, and how ancient literary theory can inform modern cognitive humanities research.
