🎓Greek Language Proficiency
The Greek Language Certificates issued by the School of Modern Greek at the University of Cyprus cover six (6) proficiency levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2, as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) of the Council of Europe.
Certification in Greek Language is awarded upon successful completion of final examinations, which may be taken:
- either after attending Greek language courses at the School (Final Examinations for School Students),
- or independently, without attending courses (Independent Certification Examinations).
All examinations, regardless of participation method, share the same structure, level of difficulty, and lead to the same officially recognized Greek Language Certificates, with full validity and recognition.
📜Recognition of Greek Language Certificates
The Greek Language Certificates issued by the School of Modern Greek are officially recognized by the Republic of Cyprus as valid proof of sufficient knowledge of the Greek language for purposes such as naturalization, employment, public sector appointments, and admission to higher education institutions in Cyprus.
State bodies such as the Public Service Commission and the Educational Service Commission accept the certificates School of Modern Greek at levels B2, C1 and C2 as valid documentation of Greek language proficiency (see here and here), while the Ministry of the Interior accepts the certificates of the School of Modern Greek at levels A2 and B1, for naturalization purposes (see here).
🧑🏫Final Certification Exams for the Students of School of Modern Greek (Following Course Attendance)
All courses offered by the School of Modern Greek lead to Greek Language Proficiency Certification Exams, giving students the opportunity to officially validate their language skills.

⚠️ The examination fees for the Final Examinations are included in the students’ tuition and no separate payment is required.
🛈 All examinations, regardless of the mode of participation, follow the same structure and level of difficulty and lead to the issuance of the same official Greek Language Certificates, with full validity and recognition (see Greek Language Proficiency).

📆 Examination Schedule
The School of Modern Greek offers independent certification exams twice a year:

First half of September: All levels (A1–C2)

First half of January: All levels (A1–C2)
🔔 Exam Information Announcement
The exam dates, number of available places, procedure, and application link are published on the School’s website two months before the examination period.
Regular website visits are recommended for timely updates.
⏳ Application Period
The application period begins two (2) months before the exam date and ends:
-
either within one (1) month, i.e.one (1) month before the exam,
-
or upon reaching the maximum number of available places,
whichever occurs first.
✅ Application Validity
For an application to be considered valid and complete, the following conditions must be met:
- The online Application Form must be correctly filled out in all required fields.
- The application must be submitted within the designated deadline or before all available places are filled.
- The examination fee must be successfully paid via the JCC platform.
⚠️ Applications that are not accompanied by a successful payment or that contain incomplete/incorrect information, will not be taken into consideration.

Results are announced within one (1) month from the examination date. -
Greek Language Proficiency Certification Examinations
Results are announced within two (2) months from the examination date.
🔁 Re-Evaluation Procedure
Candidates may request a re-evaluation of their exam by paying a €60 fee.
⚠️ The fee is non-refundable.

Applications must be submitted within one (1) month from the date of results announcement. -
Final Examinations of the School’s Students
Applications must be submitted within 3 to 7 days from the date of results announcement, depending on the deadlines for grade submission.

📄 Certificate Collection
Certificates of Attainment in Greek may be collected by appointment only, from the offices of the School of Greek Language (65 Kallipoleos St., 1071 Nicosia, 2nd floor).

Alternatively, candidates may:

(a) Authorize a third party to collect the certificate on their behalf, by sending a written notice to the School at 📧 [email protected], from the email address provided during registration.

(b) Request the postal delivery of the certificate in writing.
In the case of a postal delivery request:

(i) The candidate must notify the School in a timely and written manner at 📧 [email protected], including:

the delivery address,
-
a mobile phone number,
-
and the private courier service of their choice (e.g., ACS, Akis Express, etc.).

(ii) All postage fees are the responsibility of the recipient.
♻️ Certificate Reissue
In case of loss or damage of a Greek Language Certificate, reissuance is possible by completing the following steps:

Pay the €10 reissuance fee via the JCC payment platform.

Your full name (as it appears on the certificate)

The exam date

The certification level

The reason for the reissue

⚠️ Certificates are reissued only once and within a reasonable timeframe.
Please note:

Course attendance is not required to take the exams.

Exams are held exclusively at the University of Cyprus (Nicosia).

Candidates receive an individual email with their detailed results and certificate collection/delivery information.

Certificates are issued after the announcement of the results.

📌Greek Language Proficiency Exams – January 2026
Registration for the upcoming certification exams for levels A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2 in January 2026 (Nicosia, 7-15 January 2026) will open on the 7th of November 2025, at 09:00 a.m. (morning, CY time) and will be available until 7th of December 2025, 23:59 (evening, CY time) or until the available places are filled (whichever occurs first).
To register:
1. First, read the instruction manual for the registration and the payment of 90 or 100 euros, HERE.
2. Register and pay HERE
The application is considered valid ONLY after successful payment of the fee via JCC.
Under no circumstances, the fee paid by candidates will be refunded if they do not take the test.
Furthermore, under no circumstances may a candidate be replaced by another candidate.
