Kristin B. Aavitsland is Professor of Medieval Studies at MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society, Oslo, and, since May 2021, she has been Director of Istituto di Norvegia (The Norwegian Institute) in Rome. Trained as an art historian and medievalist, she received her PhD from the University of Oslo in 2002, having previously held research fellowships in Rome (Istituto di Norvegia) and London (Warburg Institute). Her fields of research are wide-ranging but all centre on the use of images in pre- and early modern religious cultures. She has published books and articles on pictorial language and intellectual culture in medieval Italy and Scandinavia, on the conception of Death in early Protestant Scandinavia, and on the idea of Jerusalem in medieval Scandinavia. She is also a biographer and non-fiction author in the field of Norwegian cultural history.
