April 9, 2025For some time, behavioural interventions grounded on the concept of Libertarian Paternalism have faced criticisms that they restrict autonomy and human agency. Our relevant meta-analysis, contributing SInnoPSis members, got published in the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics ! We compared transparent and covert nudges, and discovered that transparent nudges are just as effective, if not more so, without compromising ethical standards.
Transparency is key in public policy. Our findings (based on a small number of studies) illuminate aspects of optimal nudge use, encouraging transparency without fear of losing effectiveness. Whether you’re in public policy, marketing, or behavioural science, this insight impacts how you influence behaviour ethically.
Key Findings:
Transparent nudges showed a medium-sized positive effect on behavioural outcomes.
No significant impact on perceptions or unintended consequences. Effectiveness is context-dependent, highlighting the need for tailored interventions.
