Prof. Klaus von Eickels
Klaus van Eickels is Professor of Medieval History at the University of Bamberg and is a member of the executive board of the Centre for Medieval Studies. From 2006 to 2008, he acted as the Centre’s executive director. Currently, he is the foreign affairs representative of the Faculty of Humanities and Cultural Studies for French-speaking countries, playing a leading role in the co-operation between the University of Bamberg and West African universities. He is also the main editor of the online journal Regards croisés. Afrique – Europe (https://ubp.uni-bamberg.de/rcae). He has published extensively on cross-period cultural history, particularly on personal bonds and sexualities from antiquity to the 20th century. He is the author of a widely acclaimed book on Anglo-French relations and their perception at the turn of the late Middle Ages (Stuttgart, 2002). Recently, he has co-edited (with Christine van Eickels) a volume on male-male desire and homosexual behaviour throughout history (Bamberg, 2024). His current projects include comparative studies of the pre-modern West and post-colonial West Africa and the representation of illicit sexuality as disease in medieval narratives.
