Dr Katharina Schüppel
Katharina Schüppel is an art historian. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Bibliotheca Hertziana, Max-Planck-Institute for Art History in Rome, and a research assistant at the Institute for Art History at the University of Leipzig and the Institute for Art and Material Culture at the Technical University of Dortmund (habilitation in art history: “Fasting, Teaching, Healing: St Thomas the Apostle's Journey to India in Medieval Manuscripts and Maps”). Currently, she participates in the DFG Heisenberg Programme entitled “Medieval Sculptures of the Virgin in Performative Contexts: Gold, Silver, and Other Metals”. Her research interests include object and material histories – especially those of medieval artefacts (written, drawn, painted or sculpted) from their creation to the present day. She also works on performative contexts – the multisensory medieval church space and the museum or the exhibition. In general, she is interested in situations in which artefacts interact with people, other artefacts, and countless external factors, such as light, heat, sound, water, and plants.
