Dr Maddalena Vaccaro
Maddalena Vaccaro is Associate Professor in the History of Medieval Art at the University of Salerno, within the Department of Cultural Heritage Sciences (DiSPaC). She is a member of the Professors Board for the Doctoral Course in Methods and Methodologies of Archaeological and Historical-Artistic Research, and for the School of Archaeology Specialisation "Tra Oriente e Occidente" at the University of Salerno and Napoli "L’Orientale". She also serves as Scientific Lead for the same university’s unit in the "MediArSI – Interlacing Medieval Art in Southern Italy from the Normans to the Hohenstaufen (11th-13th century)" project (https://www.dispac.unisa.it/ricerca/prin?id=1244). She is the author of two monographs (Palinsesto e paradigma. La metamorfosi monumentale nella Salerno di Roberto il Guiscardo (2018) and “Pavia, città ragguardevole”. Mosaici pavimentali e cultura figurativa nel XII secolo (2016)). In general, her work focuses on the interdisciplinary nature of medieval studies, drawing connections between art, history, liturgy, and cultural practices. Her current projects explore the patronage and functional aspects of religious art and architecture, the role of relics, the intersections between decoration, iconography, and manuscripts during the medieval period, as well as the conservation and transmission of medieval cultural heritage and artworks from the Middle Ages to contemporary museums.
