BStage at Zenoneio Free University, Larnaca
The Zenoneio Free University of Larnaca invites the public to an exciting lecture exploring how Byzantium came alive on the Modern Greek stage. The talk, entitled “Byzantines on Stage: Modern Greek Theatre with Byzantine Themes”, will take place on Tuesday, 18 November 2025 at 7:30 p.m. at the “Ammochostos” Municipal Cultural Centre.
Dr Andria Andreou (Centre for Medieval Arts and Rituals, University of Cyprus) will guide the audience through the exciting world of Byzantine-inspired plays that flourished in the 19th and 20th centuries: dramas filled with emperors, court intrigue, and bold reinterpretations of history. Why did playwrights return to Byzantium? What did they choose to highlight? And can these works still move a modern audience? The lecture offers fresh insights into how theatre reshapes our view of the past.
The event is open to all and will also be live-streamed via the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation’s YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/3eaAvf2.
