Interdepartmental Programme, University of Cyprus
Why choose this programme?
This interdepartmental programme offers a distinctive and contemporary approach to Byzantine Studies, setting it apart from comparable programmes internationally.
The programme adopts an interdisciplinary perspective, combining philology, history, art history, and archaeology. Students explore political, social, economic, and ecclesiastical history, alongside ideology, cultural exchange, intellectual production, daily life, and material culture. Special emphasis is placed on Cyprus as a historical crossroad, offering an exceptional case-study for the study of Byzantium and the Latin East.
Learning extends beyond the classroom through guided visits to archaeological sites, museums, monuments, and monastic libraries, as well as participation to the Colloquium of Byzantine and Medieval Studies, which brings students into direct contact with leading international scholars. Opportunities to engage in active research projects further strengthen academic training and professional experience.
Professional and Academic Prospects
Graduates of the programme are equipped with advanced research, analytical, and intercultural skills that are highly transferable across sectors. The programme’s focus on cross-cultural interaction, governance, and identity prepares graduates to engage critically with complex historical and contemporary issues, making them competitive candidates in both academic and non-academic career paths. Career prospects include:
- Academic research and advanced studies in medieval cultures
- Cultural heritage, museum, and curatorial professions
