January 3, 2025International Conference “Rituals of War in Byzantium, the Islamic World and the Latin West”.
The DFG Research Training Group 2304 “Byzantium and the Euro-Mediterranean Cultures of War” and the Centre for Medieval Arts & Rituals (CeMAR) of the University of Cyprus are organising an International Conference entitled “Rituals of War in Byzantium, the Islamic World and the Latin West”.
The conference aims to examine the use of ritual elements in the context of medieval wars and armed conflicts across cultures. It will investigate several practices, including engagement with questions, such as the following: What form did war performances take, how did they change throughout time, and how were they constructed through narrative? How did soldiers behave in the context of battle? Who decided which forms of ritual practices were performed, and how could victory but also defeat be ritually shaped, reshaped and interpreted? How did actors use ritual performances for self-representation?
The conference’s focus on both the medieval East and West offers the opportunity for comparative work on specific features of different medieval war cultures: Byzantine, Islamic, and Latin. At the same time, the conference includes papers from the entire field of medieval research, including History, Archaeology/Art History, and Philology.
The conference will take place on 13–15 February 2025 at the University of Cyprus “Ioannis Taifacos” A106 Conference Room Kallipoleos 75, Nicosia 1678, Old Campus)
