StoryPharm Training in Critical Discourse Analysis

The EU-funded programme “Storytelling as Pharmakon in Premodernity and Beyond: Training the New Generation of Researchers in Health Humanities” (StoryPharm), coordinated by the Centre for Medieval Arts and Rituals (CeMAR) at the University of Cyprus, continues its training activities with the Training in Critical Discourse Analysis, hosted by the Centre for Languages and Literature at Lund University (ULUND) from 15 to 19 September 2025.

The Training in Critical Discourse Analysis is designed as a specialised introduction to discourse analysis and the history of medicine. It introduces participants to theories and methods of discourse that are used to analyse social discourses in different settings, as well as to the history of ideas and the history of medicine. Participants benefit from inspiring cross-disciplinary engagements. Taking the form of seminars and workshops, the training consists of theoretical and practical components. The theoretical component includes presentations of various discourse analysis methods and discussions of their fields of application. The practical component invites participants to undertake independent discourse analyses by using sources from their individual PhD projects. This training does not only present new methodologies in approaching medieval sources, but it also offers knowledge applicable to non-academic careers.

The programme includes:

• Theoretical sessions on discourse analysis methods and their fields of application

• Practical workshops where participants apply discourse analysis to sources from their own PhD projects

• Lectures on the history of medical ideas, Graeco-Roman medicine, and narrative medicine

• An excursion to Copenhagen, visiting the David Collection and the Medical Museum

• A focus on both medieval sources and knowledge applicable to non-academic careers

The training is led by Christian Høgel and Peder Flemestad (ULUND), with contributions from international experts including Henrik Rahm (Karlstad University), Ingrid Dunér (ULUND), Johanna Bergqvist (ULUND), Juhan Björn (ULUND), and Jenny Öhman (ULUND).
