Publications of the “Michalis Pieris” Cultural Centre

The “Michalis Pieris” Cultural Centre of the University of Cyprus has developed a coherent, multifaceted, and versatile publishing programme, closely intertwined with its cultural and scholarly activities.

Its publications —ranging from scholarly studies to creative works— document and highlight the Centre’s historical trajectory and its contribution to the cultural life of Cyprus and the broader Hellenic and international cultural sphere. At the same time, in line with the University’s outward-looking academic mission, these editions reflect the Centre’s commitment to the promotion of artistic creation and knowledge dissemination.

The Cultural Centre is also exploring new publishing forms that leverage the potential of digital technology, with the aim of establishing thematic digital platforms dedicated to significant works or figures of Greek and world literature. These initiatives aspire to open innovative dialogues between philological research, aesthetic interpretation, and the digital environment, laying the foundations for new modes of engaging with our literary heritage.

At the heart of this publishing activity lies the archive of the Centre’s founder, Michalis Pieris —poet, scholar, director, and university professor— which constitutes a vital resource for the intellectual and cultural history of Cyprus and the wider Greek-speaking world in recent decades. In collaboration with the University of Cyprus Library, this archive is currently being digitized and made openly accessible, with the goal of preserving, studying, and creatively utilising it for the benefit of both the academic community and the general public.

The Centre’s publishing output is structured around the following thematic areas, which reflect the nature and breadth of its activities:

  • Conference Proceedings – Symposia and Colloquia
Volumes gathering scholarly papers presented at conferences, symposia, and workshops organised by the Cultural Centre, either independently or in collaboration with institutions and organisations in Cyprus and abroad.

  • Festschrift and Thematic Volumes
Publications of a commemorative or thematic nature, dedicated to notable figures in the arts and letters or to critical cultural issues that have shaped intellectual and modern cultural life.

  • Literature
Original literary works—poetry, prose, dramatic texts—either presented during the Festival, found unpublished in the Centre’s Archive, or part of the creative work of its founder.

  • Lectures and Public Talks
Selected lectures and talks delivered during Centre events, offering reflections on contemporary thought concerning art, history, and society.

  • Publications of the University of Cyprus Theatrical Workshop (THEPAK/Θ.Ε.ΠΑ.Κ.)
The publications of Θ.Ε.ΠΑ.Κ. form an integral part of its artistic and educational mission. The performance programmes typically include studies, critical essays, information on the authors and the historical-cultural context of the work, and—most often—the full text of the adapted version. These volumes serve as valuable resources for students, educators, and researchers, bridging artistic practice with scholarly engagement.

  • Michalis Pieris Archive – Cultural Centre
Digital editions and uploads of documents related to the creative and intellectual legacy of the Centre’s founder, as well as the historical activity of the Cultural Centre, as preserved and recorded in its Archive.

In parallel, the Centre produces printed materials for the promotion of its events: posters, invitations, press releases, cards, banners, and two detailed programmes for the summer and autumn seasons of the Cultural Festival. These bilingual (Greek–English) programme booklets include information on each event along with short biographies of participating artists. All materials are made available both in print and digital format, enhancing the public reach and communicative potential of the Festival.

With its steadfast commitment to quality, public accessibility, and the preservation of cultural memory, the publishing programme of the “Michalis Pieris” Cultural Centre constitutes a vital expression of its identity and plays an active role in showcasing the cultural mission and contribution of the University of Cyprus.
