Annual Public Lecture of the Faculty of Engineering | Teaching Robots to See: Are We There Yet?
December 11, 2025The General Assembly of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Cyprus was successfully completed, marking a pivotal participatory planning process. The event took place on December 3, 2025, at Lecture Hall B101 “Andreas Alexandrou” in the Faculty’s new facilities. It represented a key milestone in shaping the Strategic Plan 2026 - 2030, which opens a new chapter in the Faculty’s operations and development over the next five years.
The discussion was chaired by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Marina Neophytou, who emphasized that the Faculty today possesses all the elements of a dynamic ecosystem of excellence: four Departments, three Research Centers, two Centers of Excellence, and over 70 research laboratories, which have achieved significant research successes and attract funding from competitive grant programs, such as the European Research Council (ERC), the European Commission, and the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation. Furthermore, many the Faculty’s academics are ranked among the top scientists globally, according to international evaluations.
She also highlighted that the new buildings are not only state-of-the-art facilities but also spaces that foster modern learning, creative collaboration, research, and innovation.
During the Assembly, the main pillars of the Strategic Plan draft were presented. This draft is the outcome of discussions within the Faculty Council, constructive consultations with the Directors of the Faculty’s Research Centers and Units, as well as engagement with the student and research community. Feedback was also gathered from key external stakeholders to ensure a substantive understanding of the actual needs and emerging challenges of industry and the economy.
The Strategic Plan 2026 - 2030 outlines the Faculty’s vision, mission, and values while presenting the main strategic priority pillars.
A discussion and exchange of views followed, with participation from academic and administrative staff, students, and researchers. Contributions focused on issues of strategic development, such as linking research and innovation to industry, knowledge transfer, international outreach, enhancing interdisciplinarity, improving the student learning experience, strengthening connections with the labor market and alumni community, and increasing the Faculty’s societal impact.
The General Assembly concluded with a call from the Dean to all members of the Faculty to continue their active participation, not only in shaping the Strategic Plan 2026 - 2030 but also more broadly, reinforcing a shared commitment to a future of excellence, innovation, and social responsibility.
