July 14, 2025The Faculty of Engineering in the New State-of-the-Art Buildings on Campus
With deep emotion and pride, the academic and administrative staff, researchers, and students of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Cyprus inaugurate their new “home” in the heart of the University Campus. The relocation to the new, cutting-edge facilities marks a new chapter full of promise for the future. This space is not merely an architectural achievement but a vibrant hub that embodies the vision, values, and strategic goals of the Faculty, with an emphasis on modern learning, cutting-edge research, innovation, and meaningful societal contribution.
Vision in Action: A Miniature University Campus
Covering a total area of 35,000 sqm, the new facilities form a scientific and technological hub comparable to the most advanced research institutions worldwide, especially in the field of innovative and applied cutting-edge technologies.
The new buildings now house the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Engineering, the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, as well as research centers and laboratories. Additionally, part of the facilities accommodate activities of the Department of Architecture, fostering interdepartmental interaction and collaboration, although the Department will continue to be based in the city center.
The total budget for the construction and completion of the project amounts to €55,000,000 (+ VAT). This amount does not include the laboratory equipment with cutting-edge technologies nor the movable equipment.
Hybrid Architecture – Contemporary Academic Design
The Faculty of Engineering has been designed with a hybrid architectural approach, consisting of three standardized wings housing the academic units, and a central free-form zone that includes common areas and the Faculty’s administration. The interior layout comprises offices, classrooms, modern laboratories, student areas, and outdoor courtyards, as well as public spaces with pedestrian paths, green islands, and semi-open circulation axes. The central zone acts as a connecting link between the various Departments, enhancing collaboration and daily interaction.
Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
The building complex meets modern standards of energy performance and sustainability. It is constructed from reinforced concrete and metal elements, with seismic protection and geothermal infrastructure. The central heating and cooling system, interconnected with the university network, employs advanced energy-saving methods that minimize energy needs. It is classified as energy efficiency class A, with the potential for upgrade to A+. The external “bioclimatic shell” provides natural shading and thermal regulation while functioning as an energy collector with photovoltaic elements, promoting a sustainable yet engaging spatial experience.
Where Art Meets Engineering
In the new Faculty buildings, art dialogues with technology, hosting the sculpture “Geometric Planes” by Cypriot sculptor Dimitris Konstantinou (1924–2010), a donation from his family. Made from stainless steel, the artwork expresses the concept of movement through geometry—an element common to both art and engineering.
Opening Our Doors
The Faculty of Engineering officially opens its doors and welcomes the academic and wider community to its new, state-of-the-art facilities. The first event will take place on September 16, 2025, with the Conferment Ceremony of Professor Stelios Kyriakides as Honorary Doctor of the Faculty.
Following the ceremony, an open welcome celebration will give attendees the opportunity to explore the Faculty’s spaces and celebrate the start of the new academic year. The official inauguration ceremony of the Faculty of Engineering is scheduled for early November, marking a new chapter in the history of the Faculty and the University of Cyprus.
