July 14, 2025Kyriakos Miltiadou, PhD candidate and lecturer at the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, University of Cyprus, was selected among the top 40 emerging European architects for 2024–2025 as part of the internationally recognized annual Europe 40under40 program. This initiative honors the new generation of talented European architects and designers.
This prestigious distinction highlights Kyriakos Miltiadou as a creative force actively shaping the European architectural landscape. It is not only a personal achievement but also a clear acknowledgment of the presence of contemporary Cypriot architecture on the European stage.
Domus Laetitiae and Kyriakos Miltiadou’s Architectural Approach
As part of the competition, Kyriakos Miltiadou presented three characteristic projects that reflect his personal architectural philosophy:
House in a Refugee Settlement / Domus Laetitiae (2022):
A restoration of a home in a refugee settlement in Nicosia, built on the footprint of a ruined structure. The project engages with the existing urban fabric and the conditions of living in a confined space, highlighting the delicate balance between private and public life.“Free Prisoners” (2023):
A powerful memorial to the prisoners of war from 1974, placed at their release site, United Nations Square. The project functions as a narrative space, inviting visitors to engage in a deeply experiential moment of historical remembrance.“Domus Maya” (2024):
A contemporary residence in the southeastern suburbs of Nicosia that reinterprets the Cypriot courtyard typology, blending traditional elements with the requirements of modern living.
Short Biography
Kyriakos Miltiadou is an architect based in Nicosia. He is a PhD candidate in the Department of Architecture at the University of Cyprus, where he teaches courses in architectural communication and design. His research focuses on the intersection of architecture and memory, particularly in emotionally charged urban environments.
He completed his undergraduate studies at the School of Architecture at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, graduating top of his class, and then pursued postgraduate studies at University College London (UCL), completing the Advanced Architectural Research program with distinction.
He runs his own practice, Studio Kyriakos Miltiadou, which has received numerous awards in both national and international competitions. In 2022, he was awarded the State Architecture Prize in the category “Work of a Young Architect,” while Domus Laetitiae represented Cyprus in the Mies van der Rohe European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture in 2023.
