August 29, 2025New OptimRES Platform for RES and Storage Systems Integration into the Grid
The KIOS Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus is collaborating with two Cypriot small and medium-sized enterprises, Aeolian Dynamics and N. Wise Wire Energy Solutions, to develop the OptimRES platform, which will facilitate the integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and Energy Storage Systems (ESS) into the electricity grid.
The platform will enhance the participation of RES units in the electricity market by offering functionalities such as forecasting, optimal planning, decision-making, and real-time control. The project is funded by the Republic of Cyprus, the Research and Innovation Foundation, and the European NextGenerationEU initiative, through the “Cyprus – Tomorrow” plan.
OptimRES will incorporate innovative features, including:
- Optimization of installations for efficient integration and planning of RES projects.
- Forecasting and real-time analysis of production and consumption data based on historical information.
- Smart decision-making for participation in the “day-ahead” market, aiming to maximize benefits and minimize fluctuation risks.
- Real-time control to ensure stable production and mitigate variability.
Innovation lies in the pilot application of the platform in a Cypriot unit that combines photovoltaics, renewable sources, and batteries. The aim is for it to operate as a “living laboratory,” enabling open data exchange for testing and evaluation.
