With the 2023 IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Technical Field Award, which represents the highest distinction for scientists/researchers conducting groundbreaking research in the field of Artificial Intelligence, Professor Marios Polycarpou of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Cyprus and Director of the KIOS Center of Excellence for Research and Innovation was honored.
The award ceremony took place on July 2, 2024, in Japan, as part of the IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence (IEEE WCCI 2024), which was attended by more than 2,500 scientists from around the world.
After the award ceremony, Dr. Polycarpou, as the keynote speaker of the IEEE WCCI 2024 International Congress, highlighted the significant role that Artificial Intelligence can play in the protection, safety, and resilience of cyber-physical systems and critical infrastructures, such as energy, transportation, and water networks. Due to their complex, interconnected, and interdependent nature, these systems face various technical and operational challenges, as well as security issues, directly impacting citizens. In cases of emergencies, failures, or cyber-attacks, artificial intelligence can aid in the timely identification of problems. Finally, Professor Polycarpou discussed the design and analysis of intelligent monitoring methods for cyber-physical systems, which can help shape more resilient societies.
