The Council of the School of Social Sciences and Education congratulates Professor Kyriakos Demetriou of the Department of Social and Political Sciences, for his election as Member of the Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts.

According to the announcement of the Academy, Professor K. Demetriou is considered internationally as one of the leaders in the field of interpretive reception of Greek and Roman antiquity. With original publications, collaborations, participation in conferences, councils and committees, he contributed to the substantial development and enrichment of a scientific field in a transitional period of crisis and challenge of humanities studies, especially the history of ideas. His contribution to the integration of the methodology of exploring the history of ideas in the various relationships and transformations of the ancient literature is highly recognized internationally. Professor K. Demetriou is the scientific editor of the international journal “Polis: The Journal for Ancient Greek and Roman Political Thought”, of the Society for Ancient Greek Studies of England and the series Companions to Classical Reception and Companions to Classical Philosophy of Brill Academic Publishers. His important publication is “In the Reign of Queen Victoria” (in Greek), with valuable material that has not been issued about Cyprus during the first critical years of English colonialism, as well as his parallel research in 19th century magazines in Greece.  His recent book “Modern Political Philosophy: From Machiavelli to Rousseau” (2021, in Greek) constitutes a significant contribution to the field of the history of ideas.
