Dr Stavroula Constantinou
Stavroula Constantinou is the Founder and Director of the Centre for Medieval Arts & Rituals (CeMAR) of the University of Cyprus and the Project Coordinator of NetMAR. She is Associate Professor in Byzantine Studies at the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies and Principal Investigator of the projects Lactating Breasts: Motherhood and Breastfeeding in Antiquity and Byzantium and Storyworlds in Collections: Toward a Theory of the Ancient and Byzantine Tale. Both projects are funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Cyprus through the Foundation of Research and Innovation. She has written widely on hagiography, gender, emotions, and the body. She is the author of Female Corporeal Performances: Reading the Body in Byzantine Passions and Lives of Holy Women (Uppsala, 2005). She has recently edited, with Christian Høgel, Metaphrasis: A Byzantine Concept of Rewriting and Its Hagiographical Products (Leiden, 2021), and, with Mati Meyer, Emotions and Gender in Byzantine Culture (Basingstoke, 2019). Her current projects look at tale theory, the rituals of Byzantine motherhood, and the intersections between artistic expressions and rituals, both profane and religious.
