Welcome to the NPIT6 website!

The NPIT6 international conference was organized by the Department of English Studies at the University of Cyprus between 25 and 27 May 2023 in Nicosia, Cyprus.

The NPIT6 conference was a successful continuation of the fruitful discussions of the previous NPIT conferences, from the ‘natal’ one at the University of Bologna/Forlì in 2012, through to NPIT2 in Mainz/Germersheim (2014), NPIT3 in Zurich (2016), NPIT4 in Stellenbosch (2018), and NPIT5 in Amsterdam & Utrecht (2021). In the 2023 conference, emphasis was placed on the status and conceptualization of NPIT, as well as on ethical questions regarding not only NPIT itself, but also professional interpreting and translation, their role in society and their possible impact on the very notions of mediation and professional identity. Under the general title 'Unstated' mediation: On the ethical aspects of non-professional interpreting and translation, the Call for Papers of the NPIT6 focused on the ethical aspects of NPIT as a generic framework for investigating the forms it can take and its repercussions for all ‘sides’ involved.

The NPIT series of events are organized without any formal bidding; each organizing committee chooses and sort of ‘passes on the torch’ to the next organizers. Therefore, as organizers of the NPIT6, we would like to thank the organizers of the NPIT5 conference, Barbara Schouten (University of Amsterdam), Rena Zendedel (Utrecht University), and Antoon Cox (KU Leuven & Free University Brussels) for entrusting to us the continuation of the NPIT events, as well as for all their guidance. We would also like to thank the University of Cyprus and the Department of English Studies for embracing, supporting, and sponsoring the organization of the conference. Special thanks go to the secretary of the conference, Thekla Constantinou, and to students of the Department of English Studies, who assisted us in the logistics of the conference; without their support the organization of this event would not have been feasible at all.

We are immensely grateful to the members of the Advisory Board as well as to other colleagues, for supporting us from the very first steps of the organization, for contributing to the dissemination of the call for papers, for undertaking the critical task of reviewing more than 90 submissions, and for ensuring quality and fairness in the selection of papers and panels. Above all, we would like to thank all the colleagues from more than 25 countries around the world, who submitted their proposals and helped us put together a very rich final program in terms of topics and perspectives, as also shown in the Book of Abstracts. Last but not least, we would like to thank our keynote speakers, Haridimos Tsoukas (University of Cyprus & Warwick Business School), Esther Monzó-Nebot (Universitat Jaume I), and Rachele Antonini (Università di Bologna), for accepting our invitation and for honoring us by sharing their expertise.

We are more than confident that the NPIT community will have another great opportunity to advance the field during the next event of the NPIT conference series, NPIT7, which will be hosted by the University of Graz, Austria, in 2026!

Finally, we are pleased to announce that JoNPIT, a new academic journal dedicated to Non-Professional Interpreting & Translation, is officially open at https://jonpit.unibo.it/. Many heartfelt thanks to Federica Ceccoli, Rachele Antonini and Ira Torresi for making this a reality! Feel free to browse the website of JoNPIT and read more on the current call for papers and on how to submit articles for review.
