Research in the Department of Business and Public Administration is a central pillar of our academic mission. Our faculty conduct internationally recognised research that advances theory, informs practice, and contributes to addressing pressing organisational, economic, and societal challenges. The Department maintains a strong research culture characterised by intellectual rigor, methodological pluralism, and engagement with real-world problems.
Our research activity is organised around three interrelated disciplinary areas, reflecting the core strengths of the Department:
Management and Organisational Studies
Research in this area examines organisations, work, and management practices in both private and public sector contexts. Faculty contribute to contemporary debates on organisational theory, leadership, ethics, governance, human resource management, corporate social responsibility, environmental management, organizational change, diversity and inclusion, sensemaking, learning and decision-making. Much of this work adopts processual, qualitative, and interpretive approaches, alongside quantitative and mixed methods, to generate deep insights into how organisations function and evolve over time.
Marketing and International Business
Research in marketing and international business focuses on consumer behaviour, business relationships, internationalisation strategies, digital transformation, sustainability, and corporate social responsibility. Faculty work addresses issues such as global marketing strategy, exporter–importer relationships, customer engagement, branding, digital and social media, and the role of firms in addressing societal challenges, including sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Operations, Analytics and Information Systems
Research in this area spans operations management, supply chains, optimisation, information systems, analytics, and decision sciences. Faculty develop and apply advanced analytical, computational, and modelling approaches to study complex organisational and societal systems, including healthcare, infrastructure, risk management, and technology-enabled decision-making.
Across all three areas, faculty publish in leading international peer-reviewed journals and scholarly outlets, contribute to edited volumes and handbooks, and actively participate in global research networks and conferences. The Department actively supports doctoral research and training, integrating PhD students into ongoing research projects and scholarly communities. Research conducted in the Department has impact beyond academia, informing organisational practice, public policy, and societal debate through publicly accessible reports, policy-relevant outputs, and engagement with external stakeholders
