Hybrid Conference 01-02 December 2022Centre for Medieval Arts & Rituals University of Cyprus “Stelios Ioannou” Learning Resource Centre Room LRC 012
The religious practice of pilgrimage constitutes the predominant ritual of the Middle Ages. This NetMAR international conference, which will be held at the premises of the University of Cyprus between the 01 and 02 December 2022, sets out to explore the multifarious facets of the interaction of arts and rituals in the complex and transformative experience of pilgrimage, both in the Middle Ages and beyond.
The keynote lecture will be given by Professor C. Stephen Jaeger. Talks from both well-established and young scholars will engage with questions related to themes such as the material and topographical contexts of the arts and rituals of pilgrimage, pilgrim routes and/or sites, the structures and functions of pilgrimage in literature and art, the ideas and experiences of pilgrims, and the afterlives of pilgrimages. The conference presentations will run under NetMAR’s four research clusters: Places, Structures, Experiences, and Influences.
This conference is the second major academic event examining the arts and rituals of pilgrimage (building and expanding on the invite-only NetMAR Research Workshop held in May 2022.
