The Mare Cyprium Project (hereafter Project) is a public outreach exercise that aims at raising awareness maritime cultural heritage (MCH) value, on the island of Cyprus. By articulating digital data acquired over the last decade into an integrated set of digital multimedia applications (DMAs), the Project will bring MCH closer to the general public and will thus contribute to the protection and preservation of monuments and sites.

Through DMAs, a series of salient themes will be explored. They include but are not limited to:

  • Interdisciplinary approaches, procedures, technologies and methodologies used in maritime archaeology.
  • Protection and preservation of the maritime cultural heritage.
  • Ancient and vernacular ships and shipbuilding.
  • Harbours, seaborne trade and maritime economies of the past.

The Project will link together DMAs through storytelling, to create a coherent and attractive narratives about inherent aspects of the identified themes, towards a better appreciation of Cypriot MCH. The DMAs will target a varied range of audiences and will be bilingual (Greek and English). The NAS expertise will contribute to testing the full functionality and engaging character of DMAs, before they are finalized (beta testing); it will also contribute to launch the DMAs, as well as to the evaluation of audiences’ engagement. Many initiatives exist that have exploited the digital domain to promote and communicate the past. The aim is to explore past initiatives at the beginning of the Project to familiarize with what has been done and to use the acquired knowledge to inform the design and planning of the Project’s DMAs.
