Since the beginning of its operation, in September 1992, the University Of Cyprus has chosen to celebrate the annual Greek Letters Day of the Orthodox Christian Church with speeches by various distinguished scholars. The underlying theme of these speeches relates to the spirit of the feast of the Three Holy Hierarchs, but also extends to broader issues, historical or contemporary, that are of concern to scholars and intellectuals.

The first lecture/event on the occasion of the Greek Letters Day, was held at the Ceremonial Hall of the University of Cyprus on Saturday, 30 January 1993, with Professor Kostas N. Konstantinidis giving a speech on “Education and Intellectual Production in Byzantine Cyprus”. The welcome speech was delivered by Professor Nelli Tsougiopoulou, Chairperson of the Interim Governing Board.
