Ten-year series of annual lectures in memory of Dinos Leventis
The series of annual lectures held in memory of the late Dinos Leventis, with the first being held back in 2004, was completed in 2013 after ten years of success. It should be noted that Dinos Leventis was a versatile personality with an international reach, who honoured Cyprus abroad. In addition, he has contributed greatly to the preservation of the cultural heritage of Cyprus, as well as to the establishment of the University of Cyprus as the leading Higher Educational Institution in our country. During his life, he was honoured with distinctions from various countries, such as Greece (Grandmaster of the Order of the Phoenix) and France (Grandmaster of the Order of Letters and Arts). Throughout the the ten-year period, the series of annual lectures covered a wide range of topics, with distinguished and internationally renowned intellectuals, academics and scientists as speakers, regarding cultural, economic, philosophical, social and other important issues related to everyday life, local and international current affairs, geopolitical conditions, etc.
The late Dinos Leventis (1938-2002) was a prominent personality with an invaluable contribution to the Cypriot society. As the president of the A. G. Leventis Foundation, at a decisive moment for the European path of Greece and Cyprus, he highlighted their culture and facilitated their integration into the European Union. An internationally recognised personality, he was appointed as Permanent Representative of Cyprus to UNESCO in 1977 and worked hard for the protection of the cultural heritage of Cyprus and for the rapprochement between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. In 1995, Dinos Leventis was appointed as a member of the Council of the University of Cyprus, which found in him a great, creative and modest supporter. As a member of the University Council, Dinos Leventis contributed decisively to the foundation of the material and scientific infrastructure and to the achievement of its goals in order for the institution to gain an international presence in the educational and scientific field. He was well-educated, well-mannered and modest. At his funeral, Judith Herrin said: "He spoke little, smiled a lot and did countless good deeds." In recognition of the invaluable contribution of this great man, the Senate of the University of Cyprus decided to establish an annual lecture in his memory, which has held around the middle of May, as part of the official celebrations of the University of Cyprus on Europe Day. The speakers were invited to the headquarters of the University of Cyprus and the texts of their lectures were published in a special issue. The University honours and will keep alive the memory of a patriot of Europe, Cyprus and Hellenism who contributed as few others to the progress of the highest intellectual institution of his homeland.
