December 8, 2025Cyprus AI Conference at the University of Cyprus
5–7 November 2025
The CYPRUS AI Conference, co-organised by the KIOS Research of the University of Cyprus and Innovation Center of Excellence and the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts, was held at the University of Cyprus from 5 to 7 November 2025. As part of the programme, the University’s Ad hoc Committee on Artificial Intelligence (AI), chaired by the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Professor Tatiana-Eleni Synodinou, organised the session “AI in Higher Education”.
In this session, Professor Tatiana-Eleni Synodinou presented the UCY Guidelines for the use of AI developed by the Ad hoc Committee and outlined the distinct challenges for course instructors, students and researchers, including copyright, the EU AI Act and GDPR in teaching and research. Professor Michael Sailer, Chair of Learning Analytics and Educational Data Mining at the University of Augsburg, presented how AI can enhance learning when it supports reflection, creativity and active engagement rather than simply automating tasks, and emphasised careful integration into course design. Assistant Professor Nikolaos Dietis of the University of Cyprus Medical School and member of the Ad hoc Committee on AI presented effective in-class, interactive pedagogy with strong practical examples from UCY.
The session was chaired by Professor Marios Polycarpou of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chairperson of KIOS and a member of the Ad hoc Committee on AI. His moderation guided a focused and productive exchange that distilled clear, actionable takeaways for course instructors, students and researchers, underscoring the University of Cyprus’s proactive approach to fostering responsible and effective use of AI in higher education.
