The University of Cyprus hosted the General Assembly of the Young European Research Universities Network (YERUN) from 7 to 9 October 2025, bringing together in Nicosia senior leaders and representatives from dynamic research universities across Europe for discussions on the future of research and higher education.
The Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Professor Tatiana-Eleni Synodinou, presented the University of Cyprus’s strategies for advancing research excellence, innovation and collaboration, and participated in discussions on the evolving European Research Area (ERA), academic freedom and the forthcoming Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.
The programme opened with a presentation by the Rector, Professor Tasos Christofides, while on 8 October the Leaders Workshop focused on policy discussions concerning the ERA Act. Speakers included Ms Magda De Carli, Head of the ERA Unit of the European Commission, Mr Slaven Misljencevic, Policy Officer at the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, and Ms Lina Tsoumpanou, Coordinator for European and International Affairs at the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of Cyprus. In parallel, the YERUN Coordinators Workshop focused on the network’s working methods and future activities, coordinated by the YERUN Office in Brussels.
Participants had the opportunity to visit the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence and the CYENS Research Centre of Excellence, as well as to tour the University campus and Nicosia’s old city. The Assembly concluded on 9 October with the YERUN General Assembly, during which members discussed the YERUN Strategy 2026–2030, reviewed financial statements and elected the new President of the network.
Hosting the General Assembly at the University of Cyprus highlighted the institution’s commitment to promoting European cooperation in research, education and innovation, as well as the active role of the Office of the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs in strengthening the University’s international networking and strategic outreach.
