The journey of afflatus in interdisciplinary writing
Speaker: Dr. Salamis Ayşegül Şentuğ
Abstract:
My art book, ‘The Journal of Small-Hearted Things,’ has recently been published trilingually in English, Greek, and Turkish by the Phaneromenis70 Culture Centre in Nicosia, where I also held a postcard exhibition featuring the postcards sent by the protagonist of my novel from 19th-century Cyprus. The art book is inspired by the historical novel I have written, in which my protagonist, Florence Passeri, visits Cyprus in 1886 for her honeymoon. In the novel, Florence Passeri is portrayed as an old woman, while in the art book, she is depicted as a young woman. What do they have in common? Infinite boredom.
‘Why is she bored? What is feminine boredom in 19th-century art and literature?’ These questions that I posed regarding the boredom of my protagonist led me to produce a podcast series called ‘Let’s Get Bored’ for the Paris Institute for Critical Thinking, where I explored boredom in art, literature, and philosophy. This also led me to become a member of the International Society of Boredom Studies, where I contributed scholarly articles. The more I delved into how boredom is examined in different disciplines, the more this theme began to expand within my novel. In this seminar, I will explore the journey of afflatus and how it manifests in my own interdisciplinary writing, ranging from academic texts to fictional works.
Biography
Salamis Ayşegül Şentuğ is an award-winning writer, poet, and academic from Cyprus. Salamis has recently been awarded a PhD degree in Contemporary Novel from the University of Kent, where she worked as an Assistant Lecturer. She holds master’s degrees in Philosophy (University of Dundee) and in Philosophy of Art and Literature (University of York). She regularly crosses disciplinary boundaries, as her academic background spans the fields of metafiction studies, colonial history of Cyprus, women travelers of Cyprus, philosophical theories of meta-fiction, philosophy of film, and performance philosophy. Salamis’ published work includes short stories, poetry, travelogues, and scholarly articles, with some of her works also translated into other languages. Salamis is the co-screenwriter of the feature-length meta-film ‘A Shameful Sham’ (2024, Nefes Films), and she is the interpretation editor of the FHNC REVIVE exhibition in London. Her artbook, ‘The Journal of Small-Hearted Things,’ has been recently published, and her debut novel is in the process of being published.
