At the impressive Center of Excellence for Biobanking and Biomedical Research of the University of Cyprus, members of the university’s alumni community recently gathered with their families for the now-established educational visit to the university’s research centers. The Office of University Development and Alumni Relations, responding to the community’s desire for lifelong learning and updates on research and innovation, organized and executed the event on Saturday, January 30, 2024, welcoming both adults and children to the Siakoleio Educational Center for Clinical Medicine, where the Center of Excellence is housed.

Initially, visitors explored the Center’s facilities, where some of the most significant modern research programs and experiments in biomedical science are conducted. They were guided through the laboratories by researchers from the scientific team, who conceptualize and carry out the work, engaging in discussions and answering questions about research areas and the marvels of biomedical science. The participants were delighted to discover that a portion of the scientific team at the Center, as in other research centers at the University of Cyprus, consists of alumni of the university.

Subsequently, the attendees were informed about the innovative activities and groundbreaking research conducted at the Center by Professor of Genetics, Constantinos Delta, the Center’s founder and director. He outlined the prospects for next-generation biomedical research in Cyprus and explained how Cypriot and foreign researchers can leverage the wealth of data and materials archived in the Cyprus Biobank. Meanwhile, the alumni’s children, particularly middle and high school students, benefited from learning about the related study programs offered by the university and opportunities for collaboration with international centers of excellence, either during their undergraduate or postgraduate studies or even in their professional careers.

Later, both adults and children took on the role of researchers, exploring the fascinating mechanisms of life through scientific activities prepared exclusively for members of the UCY Alumni Community by the Center’s team. Upon completing the program, everyone shared their experiences at the Center while enjoying refreshments and snacks at Zorbas Café in SEKKI.

This initiative, warmly embraced by members of the university community residing across Cyprus, highlights the Office of University Development and Alumni Relations’ efforts to disseminate and promote science, innovation, and research conducted at the University of Cyprus. These actions aim to inform the alumni community, especially their children as potential future students, about how these fields can be utilized. Such events provide the broader university community an opportunity to engage with researchers, familiarize themselves with the fascinating world of research and innovation, learn about their work, and explore career opportunities in academia and research.
