The American Ambassador described Cyprus as a pillar of regional security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean region, in her speech held on Thursday, February 8, 2024 at the University of Cyprus. Ms. Fisher focused on regional security, US-Cyprus relations and building the next generation of leaders.

Ms Fisher said that “In our world today, education isn’t just a steppingstone to individual success, it is the cornerstone of global stability. Just as Cyprus’ future leaders, negotiators, diplomats, scientists, and changemakers are made in these classrooms, it is universities, like this one, that shape the trajectory of nations”.

At his welcoming speech, Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Tasos Christofides underlined that during this crucial period for the world, what is required is a strong commitment to peace and reconciliation through sincere dialogue. What we witness daily in the region, does not fill us with optimism for the future. Nevertheless, this should not discourage us in our effort to act as beacons of hope. “Especially the younger generations have the right to live in a world free from hate, prejudice, violence, and war. Achieving this, requires new forms of leadership and the emergence of individuals who possess the qualities to inspire and convince that humanity is inherently good. In such challenging times, the ambassador has accepted our invitation to provide her insights both as a citizen and a diplomat and I would like to thank her for agreeing to be the keynote speaker for this evening’s lecture”.
