In the Final of the NILOS International Moot Court Competition
The team of students from the Law Department of the University of Cyprus represented Cyprus and reached the final of the International Moot Court Competition for the Law of the Sea “NILOS Moot Court Competition”, which was held online from 9 to 13 May 2022.
The University of Cyprus team faced teams from Universities of the Netherlands, China, Indonesia and Vietnam, receiving the highest score as a respondent state and also winning the Best Respondent Memorial.
In the final of the competition, before a panel of three judges chaired by the Vice President of the International Court of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) Judge Tomas H. Heiðar, the team of the University of Cyprus lost to the team of the Law School of the University of Athens.
The team of the Law Department of the University of Cyprus consisted of third-year students Panagiotis Antoniadis, Stefanos Charalambous and Anastasia Hatziangeli and fourth-year students Maria Asimakopoulou and Stefani Messiou. The team was coached by students Leto Theodorou, Lykourgos Kappas and Nikolaos Tampoukos, under the supervision of Aristoteles Constantinides, Associate Professor of International Law and Human Rights.
The competition is organized by the Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea (NILOS) of the University of Utrecht. This year’s case involved issues related to the right of ships in distress to access foreign ports, historical fishing rights, the right to lay submarine cables on the continental shelf of a foreign state, as well as issues of maritime scientific research.
