Early Childhood Education:

An array of themes crucial for early childhood education have been explored in varying studies. For example, empirical studies which explore the experiences of preservice teachers during their School Practicum (e.g. mentor-student teacher relationship) have been informing our school practicum courses.

Also studies that explore play as a means of organizing learning and development have been guiding the way we train teachers to implement play practices. Particularly, we have extensively used creative/educational drama as a means to develop children’s and teachers play skills. Finally, the implementation of play pedagogy, as exhibited in the new ECE curriculum is unfolded as a means to further support the field of ECE. Moreover, we have explored infant pedagogy and have developed the necessary course which supports pre-service teachers to be able to provide for infants. Our research work considers children, pre and in-service teachers, and parents as active participants who inform our work in the field.

Another field of study our research is focused on is early childhood mathematics education. Specifically, we investigate young children’s mathematical understanding and competences in different content domains and processes, including for example, numbers, geometry, spatial concepts, measurement, problem solving, and how they evolve. Furthermore, we research various elements/ factors that contribute to children’s mathematical learning and development, such as representations, body and hand movements and picture books.
