Profile of Programme
The PhD Programme in Journalism and Media Studies is designed to equip doctoral candidates with the theoretical knowledge and research skills required to conduct innovative, high-quality research in the fields of Journalism and Media Studies. The programme aims to train researchers capable of contributing independently and meaningfully to the international academic community. This contribution is achieved through the completion of a doctoral dissertation that demonstrates candidates’ original theoretical approaches and empirical findings, thereby advancing scholarly knowledge in the field.
The core objectives of the programme are summarised as follows:
- Theoretical and Research Competence
The programme seeks to develop an in-depth understanding and critical application of contemporary theoretical and methodological approaches in journalism and media studies. - Interdisciplinary Excellence
The PhD Programme is housed within the Department of Social and Political Sciences and places strong emphasis on interdisciplinarity as a central pillar of research training. In this context, collaboration and co-supervision of doctoral dissertations with faculty members from the Department and related disciplines, such as Sociology, Anthropology, and Political Science, are actively encouraged. Through these synergies, the programme aims to train researchers with a solid interdisciplinary foundation, capable of approaching the study of journalism and media critically and from multiple perspectives, while taking into account their sociopolitical, cultural, and technological contexts. - Development of Research Skills and Specialisation
Particular emphasis is placed on strengthening advanced research skills and fostering specialisation in candidates’ specific research interests, preparing them for high-level academic and/or professional careers. - Effective Dissemination of Research
The programme provides guidance on the effective dissemination of research outcomes, including publication in leading international academic journals and the presentation of research at scientific conferences and seminars, thereby enhancing candidates’ academic visibility and international engagement.
