Abstract:
Μια συζήτηση με αφορμή τον τόμο Coastal Architectures and Politics of Tourism: Leisurescapes in the Global Sunbelt (Routledge, 2022) O συγκεκριμένος τόμος, επιμέλειας των S.Bozdoğan, Π.Πύλα και Π.Φωκαΐδη, προσφέρει μια σύνθετη και διεισδυτική διερεύνηση για τους τρόπους με τους οποίους ο τουρισμός αναψυχής δημιούργησε παγκόσμιες συνδέσεις μετά τον Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο, μεταμορφώνοντας παράκτιες περιοχές, παραδοσιακές κοινωνίες και εθνικές οικονομίες. Τα 21 κεφάλαια αυτού του τόμου αναλύουν επιλεγμένες περιπτώσεις αρχιτεκτονικών και τοπίων αναψυχής σε όλο τον κόσμο, τοποθετώντας τα στο πλαίσιο της οικονομικής γεωγραφίας της εθνικής ανάπτυξης, της γεωπολιτικής του Ψυχρού Πολέμου, των κληρονομιών της αποικιοκρατίας και της διεθνούς δυναμικής της απο-αποικιοποίησης. Η έκδοση αποτελεί προϊόν διεθνούς επιστημονικής συνεργασίας διάρκειας 3 ετών και ξεκίνησε από ερευνητικά προγράμματα στο Τμήμα Αρχιτεκτονικής του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου τα οποία είχαν στόχο την παραγωγή νέας αρχιτεκτονικής και ιστορικής γνώσης για τις σχέσεις της τουριστικής ανάπτυξης με το λεγόμενο κυπριακό πρόβλημα αλλά και τις γεωπολιτικές εντάσεις στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο. Η συζήτηση που διοργανώνεται στο πλαίσιο της σειράς διαλέξεων SUCY, διερευνά ένα βασικό επιχείρημα του τόμου: ότι ο σχεδιασμός των «τοπίων αναψυχής», υπήρξε κάθε άλλο παρά υπερ-ιδεολογική ή απολιτική χωρική έκφραση του εκσυγχρονισμού, της ανάπτυξης και της προόδου, και συχνά απέκρυβε ιστορίες συγκρούσεων, βίας, κοινωνικών ανισοτήτων και περιβαλλοντικής υποβάθμισης. /p>

Design Research in Architecture, Revisited | Murray Fraser
Abstract:
This lecture proposes that some 80 years after the term was first coined, design research is replacing the older conceptions of the architect—craft worker, master mason, artist, entrepreneur, state technocrat, etc—with a new model of someone engaged directly in research-driven innovation, often as part of a larger design team. Through speculations and practices, architects can engage upon forms of research that produce their own particular new insight and knowledge in a process that is noticeably different from yet equal in value to other academic disciplines. Design research offers the strongest hope for architects to adapt to the rapidly changing contemporary conditions of globalisation, thus allowing them to add to the remarkable contributions of those involved in architecture ever since its inception as a creative cultural practice. Following a recap of my 2013 edited book, Design Research in Architecture, I will highlight recent examples of this process in action. /p>

Abstract:
So Far, So Close explores the tension between large-scale, impersonal urban frameworks and small-scale, intimate spaces that shape human experience. The lecture focuses on how to foster community, enhance well-being, and cultivate a sense of belonging in urban environments that often feel distant and disconnected. It aims to reconcile the dichotomy between the “distant” and the “close,” examining how architecture and urban design can generate emotional attachment to places, making them feel personal and meaningful. Drawing on our shared Mediterranean context, So Far, So Close (2,793 km in a straight line) reflects on the concerns that unite our latitudes: the responsibility to nurture ecological, poetic, political, and material relationships. The lecture will explore, through projects of varying scales, how these interconnected dimensions influence the creation of spaces that balance the vast and the intimate, offering solutions for better environments. /p>

Local Levelised Cost of Energy | Rolf Bastiaanssen
Abstract:
The "Local Levelised Cost of Energy" (LLCOE) is a proposed indicator designed to evaluate the economic performance of Local Energy Systems (LES) by focusing on end-user costs rather than just production costs. Unlike traditional Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE), LLCOE incorporates the total capital investment in generation, storage, and distribution assets, as well as operating costs, financing, taxes, and any remaining energy purchases from the grid. Expressed in €/kWh, LLCOE estimates the long-term cost per kWh for specific LES setups, allowing for flexible analysis across various scales. This comprehensive approach facilitates benchmarking against alternative investment options and supports informed decision-making for policymakers and investors. By aligning with the goals of SDG7—affordable, reliable, sustainable energy for all—LLCOE contributes to the EU's strategy for developing green energy systems. The concept was developed within the Horizon 2020 project RENAISSANCE. /p>

Abstract:
Ο Θεοκλής Καναρέλης θα μιλήσει για το αρχιτεκτονικό του έργο, για τις καταγωγές και τους προγόνους των εργασιών του, για τις αναφορές, τη διαδικασία, τα εργαλεία και τον τρόπο ανάδυσης των μορφών και των σχεδίων στις προτάσεις του. Μέσα από τη δουλειά του θα αναφερθεί για την αρχιτεκτονική ως μνήμη, ως αποτύπωμα και ως γραφή, ως εντοίχιση υλικών και πνευματικών θραυσμάτων, ως υλική επιθυμία, ως ανακατασκευή σπαραγμάτων της προσωπικής αλλά και της κοινωνικής μνήμης, ως κατασκευή της σιωπής. Θα παρουσιαστούν ένας φάρος, μια πλατεία, ένα κρεματόριο, μια πισίνα, μια αφετηρία μαραθωνίου δρόμου, κατοικίες, ναοί και ένα κρυμμένο τζαμί, μια αποθήκη, ένα εβραϊκό μνημείο και ένα μουσείο-σκάμμα. Με κάθε νέα έργο ο αρχιτέκτων προσκομίζει και συνοψίζει παλαιότερα ερωτήματα, έχοντας πια ως συνομιλητές τις προηγούμενες προτάσεις του. Στην εντιμότητα αυτής της συνάντησης και διαλόγου έγκειται η ουσία της εξέλιξης του έργου. Αυτό είναι και το βασικό νόημα της παρουσίασης μιας πορείας ενός αρχιτεκτονικού έργου. /p>

Για τις K&K o σχεδιασμός εκθέσεων είναι ένα ανοιχτό πεδίο έρευνας που αναπτύσσεται σε άρρηκτη σχέση με τους σύγχρονους προβληματισμούς γύρω από την επικοινωνία του νοήματος στο πλαίσιο του εκθεσιακού χώρου. Πως η συμμετοχή του κοινού επηρεάζει το επιμελητικό αφήγημα; Πως η ενεργοποίηση των σεναρίων διάδρασης των επισκεπτών με την εκθεσιακή εγκατάσταση αλλά και μεταξύ τους μπορεί να λειτουργήσει ώστε να αναδυθούν κρίσιμα ερωτήματα της επιμελητικής προσέγγισης; Η παρουσίαση εστιάζει στις μεθόδους επεξεργασίας των project του γραφείου που αφορούν στην επιμέλεια και τον σχεδιασμό εκθέσεων αρχιτεκτονικής - περιπτώσεις στις οποίες ο επισκέπτης κρατάει το κρισιμότερο ρόλο. Οι Κ&Κ θα υποστηρίξουν πως η συμμετοχή του κοινού δημιουργεί τις προϋποθέσεις για τον επαναπροσδιορισμό του ίδιου του εκθεσιακού αφηγήματος. Αν αυτό σε κάποιο βαθμό ισχύει, κρίνεται τελικά η επιτυχία μιας έκθεσης από την απήχηση των εκθεσιακών ευρημάτων της; /p>

Μετασχηματισμοί πλήρους και κενού στην Αρχιτεκτονική | Ελένη Παττίχη & Taulant Tozaj
Abstract:
Η παρουσίαση επιχειρεί την ανάλυση τριών έργων του γραφείου μας μέσα από το πρίσμα της σχέσης που ανέπτυξαν με το ‘κενό’, ως ιδιωτικό και δημόσιο χώρο. Θα παρουσιάσουμε το Συγκρότημα Κοινωνικής Κατοικίας Πάνω Πολεμιδιών στην επαρχία Λεμεσού του Κυπριακού Οργανισμού Αναπτύξεως Γης, το Δημόσιο Νηπιαγωγείο «Ελένειον» στη Λευκωσία της Εφορίας Ελληνικών Εκπαιδευτηρίων και την Πεζογέφυρα της λεωφόρου Τάσου Παπαδόπουλου στην Πάφο. Τα έργα αυτά βραβεύτηκαν με το 1ο βραβείο σε ανοιχτούς δημόσιους αρχιτεκτονικούς διαγωνισμούς. Το ‘κενό’ κατέχει βασικό ρόλο ως συνθετικό εργαλείο στις αρχιτεκτονικές συνθέσεις των έργων αυτών και στον μετασχηματισμό των χωρικών τους συστημάτων, είτε ως ιδιωτικό αίθριο, είτε ως δημόσιος και κοινόχρηστος χώρος. Η αρχιτεκτονική αυτή μεθοδολογία θα παρουσιαστεί σε σχέση με θεωρίες στην ιστορία της Αρχιτεκτονικής που είχαν επιρροή στην αρχιτεκτονική μας γραφή, αναλύοντας την έννοια του ‘κενού’ από διακριτό σε ρευστό στοιχείο του χώρου, μέσω της λειτουργίας του ρυθμού, της επανάληψης και της αναδίπλωσης. /p>

Contextualism | Kenzo Yamashita & Elina Kritikou (EKKY Studio)
Abstract:
This presentation highlights three architectural projects that emphasize the importance of designing with sensitivity to the surrounding environment. "Contextualism” is where the ego of the form can stay silent, and the design is aiming to blend and enhance the nature of the location creating beautiful, interesting spaces. The Pissouri Masterplan envisions a large-scale development on a unique location overlooking the sea. The layout is strategically shaped to blend within its natural environment, to optimize the spectacular views and take full advantage of the site’s natural contours. Oniro by the Sea is located at an iconic spot of Peyia, where the characteristic wreck is surrounded by the beautiful sea caves of the area. The building's design emerges organically from the landscape, blending seamlessly with the topography and local vegetation and adds a green focal point to the community. Finally, Chalet Forêt involves the renovation of a stone house in Platres Troodos, where the proposal honours both the existing structure and the mountainous terrain. All three projects revolve around contextual awareness, emphasizing the need to recognize and respect the unique characteristics of each site, allowing the architecture to harmoniously integrate with its environment. /p>

Abstract:
As we engage with the material world, materiality and detailing become predominantly evident, either as we inhabit a private space or engage with the public world. These architectural moves are all characterized by explicit material implications that certainly put the sense of room and furniture in fresh relief. Building fragments can be detailed and crafted differently and still inter-dependently. They can be manufactured so perfectly that could match the print of our finger. As I attempt to understand the underlying intention of an architectural proposal, fragments are re-evaluated as components, spaces, built in elements, movable or fixed furniture, each one having a different presence, materiality and finesse. Just as an archaeologist that would make drawings of the findings, analyse individual artifacts and sort them into groups to see the patterns. The tissue which joins them and establishes continuity of movement or perception is a great resort of generosity, generating thresholds as positive and identifiable spaces rather than residual membranes. /p>
