There is an active debate in science about the existence of a dual crisis. The first concerns a credibility crisis in several disciplines, where established results seem to fail to replicate. I review the role of economic theory in assessing potential solutions to the credibility problem. The other crisis refers to the focus on an excessively narrow set of criteria for researcher assessment, namely top publications in international journals and citation metrics such as the impact factor. I review these developments from the perspective of meta-research, a new interdisciplinary domain of study. I argue that quantitative metrics can still be useful if employed cautiously.
