RM Roadmap Project / Co-Creation Session 1
November 1, 2023In the week of June 12 to 16 the SInnoPSis team of the University of Cyprus visited the United Nations University-MERIT in Maastricht, the Netherlands, as part of the TWIN4MERIT project. The aim of the visit was to exchange knowledge through training and one-on-one interactions between researchers.
Machine learning is an exciting field of study and one that impacts and will continue to impact our lives as strongly as other technologies have. As such, you can be sure that it will generate a lot of research over the next decade, which makes it worthwhile to study. Pui-hang Wong provided hands-on experience in machine learning methods using R programming language.
Shyama Ramani has provided a workshop on the economics of innovation, a specialty of our institute. Innovation studies was a novelty for the researchers from the University of Cyprus who mostly have a behavioral economics background. Shyama showed that a major part of the rise of productivity comes through innovation. Innovation in technology and management practices has raised productivity all across industries. This has increased the size of GDP and also per capita income. One of the most important enablers to innovation is human capital. The good part of innovation led growth is that it requires continuous improvement in quality of education and health and also human rights and democracy. They all contribute to this factor.
Finally, Serdar Türkeli gave a taste of policy-oriented research on sustainability another key research area at the United Nations University-MERIT. As part of its mission to advance efforts towards a more sustainable future, UNU-MERIT has been conducting policy-oriented research on the SDGs since their adoption in 2015. This includes engaging in research on methods to comprehensively evaluate the progress of integrated efforts toward achieving the SDGs.
Rasmus Lema, Shyama Ramani, Zacharias Maniadis, Marios Demetriades, Kirsten Haaland and Nordine Es-Sadki have had a meeting to develop a strategy for R&I excellence at UCY. Beyond the workshop sessions, the junior scholars of the University of Cyprus had the opportunity to meet UNU-MERIT researchers individually, with the aim to grow these connections into fruitful collaborations in the near future.
The Twinning for Excellence in Management and Economics of Research and Innovation (TWIN4MERIT) is a twinning project funded by the WIDERA/Twinning call for proposals of the Horizon Europe program for Research and Innovation of the European Union. Grant agreement number 101079196.
